Destiny: The Wallet Game

For the minority of you who haven't heard of Destiny before let me tell you a little about what it is. You play either as a human, a person with face paint on or a machine who has been risen from the dead by a floating Peter Dinklage. You are then thrust into a plot that is in so many pieces the duct tape used to keep it together covers it all up. Many races oppose humanity but other than the fallen there isn't much in the way of backstory for them but hell who cares, They are evil right ?

From there the player trots around the cosmos killing anything that doesn't look humanoid, doing the same nine bounties over and over again along with leveling up. At the start the game was pretty promising, a new world to explore, a new universe to learn about and good gameplay to enjoy. The gamplay wore off after the first few levels and at first I stopped playing it. At this point I realized that Destiny was in fact a party game, the more people you know who play it the better experience you will have. Plaything it for the game itself is a very uphill struggle. After the first few levels new factions are introduced with little explanation as to what they want other than they are evil and want to wipe out humanity. I wasn't expecting an experience like the last of us but this is a game from a company that made Halo, I was expecting a good sci fi shooter if I am honest.

Not to say that the mechanics were bad however, the controls, the action and everything else hit the mark. What didn't hit the mark was everything else and the repetition. When the base game came out it had very little content to offer and a player with a considerable amount of time on his or her hands would have gotten through it all in about a week or less. (One indication that corners were cut was that they use bigger versions of smaller enemies for bosses)

But you stick with it until you reach the end of the game by which point you are almost at level twenty. "The game begins at level 20" was an expression I heard way to often when the game came out and it made no sense to me. Why would the game start two thirds through the level tree ? When I reached level twenty is when I discovered what the meaning behind it was. When you get to that point you don't gain experience anymore but you use light to level up, each piece of Armour has a set amount of light which all adds up.From there comes the repetition, to get better Armour you need to but it or your lucky enough to earn it after a strike. The vendors who sell the Armour do not deal in the regular currency but in Vanguard marks which are earned mostly by doing strikes. Every week the strikes are carried out a stupid amount of times until finally you get the Armour but there is always something better to get. Other than Vanguard marks there are Crucible marks that can be used to get Crucible gear,

The Crucible is a place that is common in MMORPGs but a little out of place in Destiny. It's an arena where guardians kill other guardians. That being said with a magic floating Peter Dinklage to help raise you from the dead dying loses it's sense of finality I suppose.

When I think of Destiny however one thing that annoys me more than anything is the periodic expansions that is released for them. For expansions that are essentially map packs with a story pack stuck on the cost of £20 is a bit steep. But what is this that they are offering players ? an Expansion pass ? this offers players both expansions for one cost which does sound like a deal. However the overall cost for both would be £40 and the expansion offers then for £35. Bargain! Calling it an Expansion pass instead of a season pass probably sounds better than "We want your money pass". Now this may seem a little bit of a one sided argument to you readers but look at what content each expansion offers players.

The Dark Below - £19.99

Story Missions

Strikes

Raids
  • Crota's End

Crucible Maps

With a range of weapons and items some of which became available for all players upon release.

House of Wolves - £19.99

    Story Missions

    Strikes

    Arena

    Crucible Maps

    Timed Events

Seems like a lot I agree but when you consider that you could clear out all the story missions in one afternoon that doesn't leave a lot left. What is left will just add to the repetition offered by the base game.

If they were going to continue with the £20 price tag then I would of been annoyed but not surprised. With the announcement of The Taken King however Bungie has upped the price to £40, what most people payed for the base game. In it's defense Bungie said that The Taken King offers more than the other expansions whose total price was £40. When competitors like CD Project RED are so happy that people have bought the game they not only release a season pass but offer gamers who haven't bought the pass free content that will actually add to the game they have bought. A game that offer 25 - 200 hours of gameplay without any expansions.

Can you guess what I did ? that's right I traded in my copy of Destiny and got Witcher 3 instead. If players aren't taken into consideration in regards to Destiny then I don't want to be counted among their numbers.
